Box Score
Hope started Overway, Seiler, Eidson, Byers, Benson. Seems like we should get used to this. Everyone else played at least 10 minutes. The box score looks like Hope used a mini-version of the "Grinnell System", I am told by reputable sources they did not, was also told Hope hasn't had to many of these kinds of games so it was nice. Chase DeMaagd sat this one out recovering from his fall from Mt. Kresge. Matt Parisi did not play due to illness.
Game Recap:
My choice today was drive to Holland and see a game that wouldn't be much of one or go down to Olivet and see a game that would be. I chose wisely.
This is one of those that again I did not see nor really knew much about, I got a halftime score and final score because that is all I needed. I'm hopeful Eric Dougal can get Kzoo back into a position where my easy choice of the day between those two previous choices is to go to Holland. We'll see, seems far off in the future. Right now Hope won its 31st in a row against the Hornets, a few to many of them in Holland have looked like this one.
I really should just stop here because I don't know what else to say about this, it happened the way it was supposed to happen and there was no pre-Calvin letdown.
Kzoo's biggest previous loss on the season was 30 points to DePauw, Hope tied that today. Warm and fuzzy feelings with that one.
Long winning streaks take strange and improbable things to make them happen most of the time. In this 31 game streak is 21 double-digit Hope victories, 11 of those by more than 20 points, 5 by more than 30. So yes, a lot of Hope domination. But also 3 overtime wins and 3 other games Hope won by 1, 2 and 3 points. Any of those could have gone Kzoo's way and this streak isn't a streak. But, it is a streak.
Scoring and Interesting Stats:
Assists: I really don't look at assists much, in this one Hope had 25 Kzoo had 5. That has to be one of the widest margins you'll ever see. (minus games against internet schools)
Rebounds: Kzoo was kind of sort of holding their own on the glass this season. Hope obliterated them today. 48-29 and the offensive rebounding difference was massive as you'll see later.
Free-throws: Hope fans have a love-hate relationship with them.
Billy Seiler: 18 points, 8-10 shooting.......sneaks in on ya doesn't he
Colton Overway: 12 points, 11 assists.........two double-doubles in a little over a weeks time, this one the more natural point guard way
Alex Eidson: 11 points, 5 rebounds, 3-4 from three....a shiny, shiny rock
Nate Snuggerud: 10 points in 10 minutes.......efficient
Efficiency:
Estimated number of possessions: Hope 85 Kzoo 86
Apparently they were in a rush to lose big. I don't even have to be there to know this pace is not to Kzoo's advantage. This became the highest paced game Hope's played this year minus College of Faith, surpassing the Aurora game. I really didn't think that would happen.
Offensive Efficiency: 114.49
Hope's been pretty consistent since returning from Florida, the only blip was the game at Albion, so this is a nice bounce back from that. However from an efficiency point of view, Kzoo is really not that good on defense. First half was better than the second.
Defensive Efficiency: 78.16*
I didn't really expect this kind of performance given the number of points. It was really hard for Kzoo to score today. Actually it was hard for them to score all week. Oberlin also did this to them, so don't get to excited.
Rebounding Efficiency:
Hope: 45.5% of available offensive rebounds
Kzoo: 14.7% of available offensive rebounds
There's no other way to put it, Hope killed them on the glass. Want to know how bad it was, Kzoo had zero second half offensive rebounds. Their last offensive rebound came with 7 minutes left in the first half, 27 minutes without an offensive rebound. Second chance points was 18-3 to Hope.
* To calculate efficiency you need to calculate possessions, one of the components of possessions is offensive rebounds. When you get zilch for offensive rebounds in a half you can expect your efficiency to go down. But part of defense is also keeping the other guy off the glass so this also rewards Hope for doing just that.
Moments or Keys to the Game:
Absolutely destroying Kalamazoo on the glass.
I'm told Seiler had a nice block, close enough, I'm half-assing this one anyway.
My Game Ball Goes To:
Billy Seiler, when quized this was the name most frequently mentioned. Statistically it sure looks like it. That's pretty good when you make more of an impression on people than a pg with a double-double.
Standings
Overway - 3
Eidson - 2
Snuggerud - 2
Seiler - 2
Byers - 1
DeMaagd - 1
VanArendonk - 1
Benson - 1
Gardner - 1
Going Forward:
Its time, isn't it.
Hope and Calvin are both 4-0 in league play. Here's something that will floor you, these are the best records these two teams have had coming into this game, in league play, since at least 1998, the archives don't go back any further. I checked. Both were 3-0 in 2009 but every year before then one or the other screwed around and lost to someone. In 2010 and 2011 they opened the league season against each other(which was dumb).
The MIAA seems a little, um, offensively challenged this year save for these two. I suspect we'll see a pretty good game and its going to come down to who can stop the other more frequently. Seasons have a way of building towards crescendos, points on the schedule to aim at. This is certainly one of them. Returning from Florida Hope's next few games became about building momentum for this showdown. Improving the defense, smoothing out the offense. This may tell us how far they've come.
Yeah, its really much more than I described isn't it.
Up Next: Me vs finding any way possible to avoid thinking about Wednesday, while constantly thinking about Wednesday.
Wednesday Jan. 16 Hope at Calvin
